Preparing for College
Off-Campus Courses
Health-Related Programs
A variety of programs in the health field are offered in connection with hospitals. These programs may be
offered completely within a hospital or in a proprietary school, in cooperation with a technical school, or
at a community college or state university. Programs may vary in length from a few months to two years.
Off-Campus Sites
A number of colleges and universities offer classes at locations other than the main campus.
It is possible for a student to earn credit in several courses through these programs. Your
high school counselor or the college admission office can provide you with information about
these programs.
APT College Credit Telecourses
Telecourses broadcast on Alabama Public Television (APT) in cooperation with colleges and universities
throughout the state provide an alternate method to earn college credit. Enrollment for an APT telecourse
is completed and credit granted through the participating college or university, to which the appropriate
tuition is paid. Textbooks are also purchased from the college or university, with assignments, instructor
guidance, and grades being provided by the telecourse professor. For more information, call (205) 328-8756.
Distance Learning Courses
Colleges and universities offer credit courses that apply to degree programs through correspondence or
independent study courses, interactive television, satellite, and the internet. Credit is awarded by the
institution that offers the course. Contact the college admissions office for admissions requirements,
restrictions on enrollment, completion criteria, a list of courses, details about financial aid, and
additional information.
Southern Regional Electronic Campus
The Southern Regional Electronic Campus allows students
to complete higher education programs at home electronically. The Electronic Campus is offered
through the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB), of which Alabama is a
member. Through the Electronic Campus, students in Alabama can take online classes and earn
selected online degrees from institutions in SREB member states. Some participating institutions charge
out-of-state tuition for nonresidents; others charge a single tuition rate for all students regardless of
residence. The certificates and degrees are awarded by the schools which offer them.
The Electronic Campus also offers courses in other subjects not leading to degrees. All courses
are fully accredited, but students need to check with their school and the institution from which they are
taking courses about the transfer of credit.
Students should check with the institution offering the program or course about:
- Admissions.
- Credit transfer.
- How programs and courses are delivered.
- Financial aid.
- Prerequisites and other enrollment matters.
- Refunds.
- Registration.
- Tuition and fees.
The SREB's Academic Common Market/Electronic Campus Initiative makes available online degrees
from out-of-state institutions at in-state tuition rates for programs approved by the Alabama Commission
on Higher Education.
SREB, through an arrangement with the Georgia Board of Regents, provides students with access to GALILEO,
an online library and database of thousands of periodicals and scholarly journals.
